USHERS
Responsible to: Leadership Board
Membership: A Head Usher and 4 or more ushers (Person receiving highest
number of votes becomes Head Usher)
Term of Office: Elected for a one-year term
Responsibilities: Act as hosts in expressing the church's welcome to members and
guests. Help maintain an atmosphere of worship and order.
Duties of Head Usher:
* Orient all ushers to their duties.
* Set an example to the other ushers in attitude and conduct.
* Draw up a schedule for ushering on Sunday mornings and provide for ushering
at other special services.
Duties of Ushers:
1. Arrive early enough for services to make sure bulletins are ready to hand out,
lights are on, doors are unlocked and heat/ventilation is satisfactory.
2. Be present to welcome worshippers when they arrive and hand each a bulletin.
3. Greet visitors; offer to usher unaccompanied visitors to seats in sanctuary; be
prepared to introduce them during the appropriate time. Ask visitors and
newcomers to complete “Let’s get acquainted forms” and assist in collecting the data.
4. As much as possible, direct the seating of the congregation to the front pews and
reserve rear pews for latecomers and parents with small children.
5. Receive church offerings, and as required, distribute and/or gather up special
materials during the service. Assist the sound person as needed.
6. Be alert to where things are located and help people find what they need.
7. Tabulate and record Sunday morning worship attendance.
8. See that all lights are off; heat is turned down when appropriate; bulletins and other
papers are removed from sanctuary; and the building is locked after meetings where
ushers' services are required.
9.Be aware/prepared of evacuation procedures in case of emergency.
